Abstract:  Converging evidence in psychology shows that our judgments about personal identity are at odds with the two dominant philosophical approaches to personal identity. While these results initially speak in favor of a promising new approach, which I will call the attitude-dependent approach, further examination of the results suggests that even this new approach has serious difficulties. Is there a way to reconcile the attitude-dependent approach with the cognitive psychology of our self-concept? I will discuss possible avenues forward.
